Learning the Business: Q&A with Training Chief Lauren Gustin

After our 20+ years in business, Juice It Up! has fine-tuned a training program second to none. We bring serious expertise to the table, and that’s something you won’t likely find with the latest açaí bowl business or smoothie franchise.

It’s worth remembering, as you explore juicing franchise opportunities, that we were a trailblazer in the juice and smoothie business when we opened our first Southern California location in 1995, followed by our first franchised location in 1998. Our training helps franchisees get a solid footing before they embark on a path toward success. We talked to Senior Operations Manager Lauren Gustin about what franchise candidates can expect from our training programs, now and down the road.

What kind of training do you provide for someone who has just joined the JIU system? For instance, how many hours of hands-on training, how many classroom hours, etc. for a new franchisee?
With brand strength of 23 years, we have streamlined training into 3 phases, thus providing support to our new franchisees every step of the way and ongoing support for the life of the business. Here’s a look at our different training phases:

  • Phase 1: Orientation – 8 Hours
    Introduction to the Juice It Up! franchise system, local store marketing, program development and construction overview
  • Phase 2: Initial Training Program – 50 Hours
    Week-long classroom and in-store experience focused on store management and operations, equipment and technical systems, accounting and financial management, product knowledge, food safety, local store marketing and the customer experience.
  • Phase 3: On the Job Training – 50 Hours
    Corporate trainers training staff and franchisee on site at the new location. Four days of training and the fifth is spent assisting on the day of the soft opening to the public.

What do you offer in terms of ongoing support for franchisees who are already in business?
Part of our ongoing franchisee support includes store visits and meetings throughout the year, quarterly training seminars and our annual conventions that focus on initiatives being rolled out within the system.

How does Juice It Up! training differ from other brands?
The longevity of the brand has allowed us to refine our onboarding process and really tailor the experience to each individual franchisee. Our corporate team members are experts in their fields and are highly focused on delivering a personalized one-on-one guiding experience. Each new store is unique. As we expand into other regions and states across the nation, we make it a priority to individualize the support to the needs of the franchisee and to the unique market in which they are opening. Each store is assigned an industry-experienced Operations Manager to be an added layer of around-the-clock support.

Do you provide training for managers or employees?
Phases 1 and 2 are open to franchises and their designated managers. Phase 3, On the Job Training, includes in-store training for the franchisee’s entire team.

How do you incorporate technology into your training?
Technology is driving efficiencies in franchise operations. Each training phase incorporates tech education that includes in-depth classroom training; on-site, hands-on training; and online web trainings for point of sale, scheduling, franchisee portal, quality assurance monitoring system and more.

What do you hope franchisees come away with after training — what’s the goal?
Once training is complete, we hope the franchisee walks away with an increased passion for the brand, the Juice It Up! lifestyle and the confidence and skills needed to grow their Juice It Up! into a profitable business.
